My daughters were a little bit disappointed when I placed a ban on our family from visiting or supporting the circus. When I was a child, I love the circus; it was a highlight of the year for me. There are so many fascinating things that a child will find in a circus.
As you are walking up to the circus, all you can see is the red tent, but once you slip yourself in between the red heavy fabric, it is wonders inside, the music, the wild animals performing, the clowns and the beautiful ladies parading. The one that I love the most is the acrobats and the suspense. I used to gasp, wanting to close my eyes but yet so worried I missed the beautiful stunt as the acrobats throw themselves up in the air, only to the mercy of the other acrobats swinging upside down to catch them.
Since then, I didn't visit the circus for a long time until about 7 years ago, after I had my first born daughter. She was just over two years old, my husband and I decided it would be a brilliant experience for her, recalling our own childhood memories.
However, sitting there as a wiser adult it was a different story. I felt a pang in my heart. I wanted to cry just looking at those ponies all dolled up, and asked to galloped almost dancing, while the clown run alongside them. It was horrific to watch.
Then, we were allowed to get our photograph taken with an African Elephant. He was so big, even sitting down, he was huge! We got really close to the elephant to be photographed. Even while queuing, I knew it wasn't the right thing to do. I brushed these feelings aside and dismiss it by convincing myself that I was over-reacting. We finally got next to the elephant and for the first time I got to really take a good look at this giant.
I search this elephant's face and I will never forget his eyes! I wish I know how I can describe it to you; perhaps what I saw in his eyes can be describe as hope-lost! He looked blanked, absolute defeat and it's utterly heartbroken sight. He might even been drugged to stay docile. I felt like crying, it was so wrong!! It was horrible!! It made me angry.
Do you ever wonder how such powerful giants are being trained to perform so comically so that they can humor our human heart?

As you can see this punishment stick is being probe to pierce in the elephant skin, until it hurts them, just to get them to behave they way the trainers wants.
The young ones are trained from small and they will grow up believing this is their destiny, as they seen their parents in circus and will grow up in one doing everything their mom does. You know how closely knit elephants families are, right.
The image below is what we hope to see for Elephants and their families. As an elephant mom is very loving creature and naturally very protective over their young.
The reality for elephants in a circus life is very different.
Now, imagine transporting these large wild animals from town to town, changing environment and through traffic? And yet, surprisingly, we do not hear as many issues with rampant or casualty caused by these animals. It is of course unnatural, and how did they get tamed? Do you ever wonder what the size of the enclosure they travelled in is?
Think about transporting the larger animals, how do they behave and not over-turn the transport that pulls them?
Yes, it is amazing looking at tigers and lions performing, all under a control of a man. Do you really believe that tigers love jumping through the ring of fire? Do you really believe that the trainer achieve this by "positive reinforcement" vs. punishment? Think about it.
What about decorating and applying paint or make-up on wild animals so that they look funny or cute, just to amuse some of us?
The strong-willed animals are sometime so abused that they will lose their mind. Yes, I know, they are animals and they may not be able to think like human, but they have feelings just like us. In fact, at times I think they have more feelings than us.
Why isn't the circus banned forever? I know it's cultural but the prices to these poor animals are just too much for the sake of entertainment. We are wiser now, we know what is right and what is wrong, then why in some places circus are allowed to perform with animals.
It is not just the exotic animals that we must protect; we must protect all animals equally.
Can you just imagine sitting among the crowd, gasping, wooing, and clapping their hands with delight as these animals tortured all in the name of entertainment? Can you imagine being part of them?
For me, this is animal slavery.
Albeit it was 7 years ago since I last been to a circus, I cannot shake-off that guilt. I didn't do anything to help them then.
Maybe, too little too late, maybe not.... perhaps the only thing I could for those animals is be their voice.
The concept is simple.....
"no demand, no supply"
Will you join me in my effort to boycott circus that uses animals for entertainment?
Thank you.
